Sauna door: glass or wood, and the rules it has to follow

A sauna door is the one component with a genuine safety rule attached, and it is also the piece that most changes how a cabin looks and feels. Glass or wood is a real decision about heat retention, light and cost, but the rule about which way it opens is not negotiable.

It must open outward, with no lock

A sauna door swings out and is held by a friction or magnetic catch, never a latch that can jam and never a lock. Anyone inside must be able to leave by leaning on it, including someone who has become unsteady in the heat. If a door you are offered locks, opens inward or needs a handle turned, it is the wrong door.

Glass against wood

Full glass makes a small cabin feel much larger and lets you see in, which matters if someone is in there alone. It loses more heat than an insulated timber door and costs more. Wood insulates better and suits a cabin you want dark and enclosed. Many buyers take a wood door with a glass panel as the compromise.

The glass has to be tempered

Any glass in a sauna door is tempered safety glass, typically eight millimetres, which breaks into blunt fragments rather than shards. Bronze and grey tints cut the view in and the glare. What matters as much as the pane is the frame and the hinge, because thermal cycling works fixings loose over years.

Handles, hinges and seals

Interior handles are wood, always, because metal reaches cabin temperature and burns. Hinges should be adjustable, since timber moves and a door that dragged in summer will swing free in winter. A sauna door does not need a tight gasket: a small gap at the bottom is the incoming air path, and sealing it degrades the ventilation.

Questions people ask about sauna door

Can a sauna door lock?

No. It opens outward on a friction or magnetic catch so anyone inside can leave by pushing, even if they are unsteady.

Does a glass door lose much heat?

More than an insulated timber one, enough that a heavily glazed cabin should be sized a step up on the heater.

Why are sauna handles wooden?

Metal reaches the cabin temperature and will burn skin. Any metal that is touched inside a sauna should be wood capped or recessed.
