Steam shower kit: what comes in one and what your bathroom still needs

A steam shower kit is the cheapest route to steam at home, because it converts a shower you already have rather than building a room. What people underestimate is how much of the job sits outside the box: the kit supplies the steam, and your bathroom has to supply an enclosure that can survive it.

What a kit contains

A typical kit is a generator sized by enclosure volume, a control panel, a steam head, a drain or flush valve and the wiring harness. Better kits add an auto flush to manage scale and an aroma or light option. Enclosures sold as complete cabins go further and include the glass, the tray and the seals as one unit.

What your bathroom has to provide

Steam condenses on every surface, so the enclosure must be fully waterproofed, not merely tiled, and the ceiling should slope so condensate runs to a wall rather than dripping. You need a sealed door with a vapour-tight top, a drain within reach of the generator, and a dedicated electrical circuit sized to the generator's rating.

Sizing the generator

Generators are rated to an enclosure volume, and the volume figure is adjusted upward for materials that soak heat away: natural stone, large format porcelain, glass block and exterior walls all push you to the next size. Undersizing shows up as a room that never reaches temperature, which no amount of running time fixes.

Where the money actually goes

The kit is often the smaller half of the bill. Waterproofing, a sloped ceiling, the glass, the electrical run and the labor usually exceed the hardware. That is the arithmetic that sends many buyers to a sauna instead, which needs no plumbing and no tanking, and it is worth doing before you commit.

Questions people ask about steam shower kit

Can I fit a steam kit to an ordinary shower?

Only if the enclosure can be sealed and made vapour tight, including the door top. An open topped shower will not hold steam.

Where does the generator go?

Out of the wet area but within the pipe run the maker specifies, commonly a vanity, a closet or an attic space that stays above freezing.

How long does the room take to heat?

A correctly sized generator gets a domestic enclosure ready in a few minutes. If yours takes much longer it is undersized for the surfaces.
