Sauna dimensions get quoted as an exterior footprint and a seat count, and neither tells you what the room will be like. Four internal measurements decide that, and they are the ones to pull out of a specification sheet before you compare two cabins that both claim to seat four.
Floor area per person
As a working rule, allow a little under two feet of bench length per seated person and about a foot and a half of bench depth. A cabin claiming four seats on a bench run that would fit three adults is counting children or counting optimistically. Add floor area for the heater and its guard, which is not usable space.
Ceiling height and why lower is better
Heat rises, so a tall sauna puts the useful heat above your head and costs more to run. The measurement that matters is the gap from the upper bench to the ceiling, and a modest one is correct. A ceiling height copied from the rest of the house is the commonest fault in a converted room, and it cannot be fixed with a bigger heater.
Bench height and depth
The upper bench wants to be level with or above the top of the heater stones. Depth decides whether you can lie down: a shallow bench seats you and nothing more, a deep one lets you stretch out. If both matter, a wider lower bench and a deeper upper bench is the usual arrangement and worth asking about specifically.
Clearances and the door
Every heater states a clearance to combustibles and to the bench, and a floor standing model needs a guard. The door swings outward and needs room to do it. And the cabin has to reach the room: measure the largest assembled panel against your doorways, stair turns and any ceiling drop on the way.
Questions people ask about sauna dimensions
How much space does one person need?
A little under two feet of bench length and about a foot and a half of depth, plus a share of the floor. Heater clearance is on top of that.
What ceiling height should a sauna have?
Lower than a normal room. What matters is the gap above the upper bench, and too tall wastes heat above your head.
Are exterior or interior dimensions quoted?
Both, and only the interior is comparable. Walls and insulation vary by several inches between makers.
